How are paperback books bound?
Most paperbacks and some hard cover books have a “perfect binding”. The pages are aligned or cut together and glued. A strong and flexible layer, which may or may not be the glue itself, holds the book together. In the case of a paperback, the visible portion of the spine is part of this flexible layer.
What holds a book together?
Footband: Similar to the headband (see below), a footband is a special band at the bottom of the spine that hides the glue and helps keep the spine together. Gutter: The space on the inside margin of pages where the book is bound.
What is the difference between a paperback and a softcover book?
A paperback, also known as a softcover or softback, is a type of book characterized by a thick paper or paperboard cover, and often held together with glue rather than stitches or staples. In contrast, hardcover or hardback books are bound with cardboard covered with cloth, plastic or leather.
How do I keep my book from falling apart?
Use hinge tape! Put it in books that will circulate heavily before they fall apart and they will last much longer. I use a ton of book tape every year. I always tape the spine of new books.
How do I protect my paperback book?
To keep your book intact, put it in a Ziploc bag before putting into your backpack or briefcase. Alternatively, if you have enough room, you could also put the book in a rectangular-shaped lunch box or other plastic container.
How do you reinforce a paperback book?
Mass-market paperbacks are generally the lowest-cost books you will buy and you may wish to discard them after several circulations. Many librarians simply reinforce the weakest area of these books — the corner where the covers attach to the spine — with a durable clear tape, such as Demco Crystal Clear Book Tape.

How do you bind a book without glue?
Roll the tape around and tie it together, do this to all the holes. Now, place the tape around the edge of the book and tape the edge together like the binding of a normal book. Now, write the title onto your book and you have a well held together book that is made easily without any glue!
